Change Management: Attributes Migration
Feature Type:

New Feature

Anticipated Launch Date:

June 2005

Developer Impact:

In the past two years, Item Specifics (attributes) have been launched on the eBay marketplace to improve the listing and finding experience for buyers and sellers of certain categories. eBay retains and exercises the ability to change site metadata on a frequent basis, often weekly. These changes can generate errors and warnings for eBay sellers using eBay tools, as well as 3rd party tools & services, leading to reduced listing volume and seller business impact. Worse, many developers and their customers encounter significant impediments to their listing capabilities and business process with every change.

This new feature will move the burden of site metadata changes from our community of buyers & sellers including 3rd party developers to the platform itself.

Feature Description:

As eBay updates and revises existing attributes metadata, this feature will allow eBay to seamlessly migrate our sellers’ listings to the up-to-date and valid attributes settings. This functionality is similar to what eBay uses today to migrate sellers listings from expired categories to currently valid categories. Attributes Migration allows listings submitted with the noncurrent attribute set to be migrated to the new attribute set as long as long as the attribute ids in the request exist in the new set. This feature also significantly reduces the number of attributes warnings.

This is how it works. In March 2005 we introduced Item Specifics Warning and Error Message Enhancements to the AddItem family of calls. With the June release, Attribute Migration will automatically occur as long as listings are submitted with the attributes error handling parameter set to “Best Effort”. This is the default setting for the AddItem family of calls which are

  • AddItem
  • VerifyAddItem
  • AddLiveAuctionItem
  • ReviseItem
  • RelistItem

When an end user submits a listing via the API, but the attribute(s) that are listed are not current, the AddItem family of API calls will automatically migrate the attributes passed by the user.

Feature Benefits:

It is anticipated that this feature will significantly reduce failed listings due to out of date attribute
